The Great Mosque of Kairouan, north-east of Medina, is one of the most important monuments of North Africa, who built the first on the African continent in 671 by the Arab general Oqba Ibn Nafaa.

That’s controversial; some airline experts argue it means more flights get cancelled because of weather than there used to be. But I think it’s been a good thing overall, as people aren’t as frequently stuck in the airport or on planes waiting to take off.

Now What?

We may be safer and better protected, but we aren’t happier. The University of Michigan’s American Consumer Satsifaction Index has been tracking Americans’ opinions of airlines since 1995, and the industry as a whole has held steady in the mid-60s for the past ten years. Looking at individual airlines, the majors take big dips the year after they merge (because mergers are an awful mess) but the only standout is Southwest, whose score of 81 is much higher than other major airlines.

The culprit, I’d say, is the overwhelming sense of dehumanization that’s come over air travel in the past ten years. Maybe the TSA is more efficient than the old security system, but it turns travelers into objects to be virtually and literally strip-searched. On board, planes are more crowded, seats are often smaller, flight attendants crabby, and little amenities have been taken away. And when we add up all the fees, we aren’t paying less for this than we did in the late ’90s, either.

We’ve spent the past ten years in airports staring back at 9/11, figuring out what we could do not to repeat it. How about we spend the next decade figuring out how to balance safety with making flying feel more human again.

How to Fly Safer

Ten years after 9/11, it’s both harder and safer to fly. We have fewer airline and flight choices, we pay less for tickets but more in fees, and airport security can be really, really annoying. But airport security is a lot more professional than it used to be, and it’s possible to surf the Internet on planes.

Is that a better experience? Before you anoint flying in 2011 the “worst year ever,” remember the epic delays of the summer of 1999 when thousands of people were stuck in airports for days. And remember that back before 2001, airport security was widely considered a farce — there just wasn’t one big agency for people to target. Planes are crowded and security lines are miserable nowadays, but it isn’t all bad.

Hate The TSA? You Have A Short Memory

Shortly after 9/11, there were three big changes in airline security: pilots got guns, cockpit doors were locked and reinforced, and the TSA replaced the private contractors running airport security around the country. A few years later, airports finally started screening all checked baggage for explosives (something which had been demanded since the Lockerbie bombing in 1988).

The TSA has come under a lot of criticism for being reactive, less efficient than foreign airport security systems, and for being “security theater.” TSA officers occasionally do epically stupid things like patting down babies and disconnecting people’s urostomy bags. But you have to remember how abysmally bad our airport security system was before the TSA came about.

In 2001, airport security paid less than the starting salaries at airport fast-food restaurants. In 1987, security screeners allowed 20% of dangerous objects to pass through checkpoints, and their performance had actually gotten worse by 2001, General Accounting Office official Gerald Dillingham said then.

Argenbright Security, which ran screening operations at 46 of the nation’s busiest airports in 2001, had been convicted in federal court of hiring felons as security screeners; that year, the DOT found it still employed 37 people with outstanding arrest warrants. According to the TSA, federalizing airport security has lowered worker turnover from 125% per year to 6.4%.

While the TSA professionalized things, it also created somewhat-humiliating and time-consuming new procedures following the discovery of new threats. One failed shoe-bomber in late 2001 means that ten years later, we all still have to walk barefoot through security. A failed plot in 2006 involving liquid explosives now means we all have to throw out our water bottles, and has led to absurd, Talmudic discursions on what constitutes a “gel.” And a failed “underwear bombing” plot in 2009 led to the new “nude-o-scan” machines, scanners which try to see under peoples’ clothes.

Does any of this make us safer? Maybe, maybe not. It’s definitely worth debating the line between security, comfort and privacy. But it’s certainly not worse than the incompetent, corrupt airport security regime we had before the TSA came into being.

There are a few hopeful signs out there right now. The TSA seems to be coming to its senses on screening children, and is running a pilot program by which frequent travelers can zip more easily through security. The public definitely has to keep up the scrutiny and pressure, but that’s another advantage of security being run by the government: the public can keep up pressure in a way it couldn’t when security was run by anonymous, lowball-bidding rent-a-goons.

Fewer Choices, Higher Prices

September 11 led to a sharp, brief drop in air travel, followed by a federal bailout of the major airlines. But it had one much bigger long-term effect on airfares. The war in Iraq, among other things, led to dramatically higher fuel prices.

Major airlines were already merging before 9/11; American bought TWA in January 2001, shutting down TWA’s independent operations by the end of that year. But since 2003 when the U.S. invaded Iraq, oil prices have been much higher than previously; according to InflationData.com, oil prices averaged $65.94/barrel between 2004-2010, more than double 2001′s price of $29.23.

So we’ve watched airlines merge and fees grow by leaps and bounds. US Airways and America West combined, then Delta and Northwest, United and Continental, and finally Southwest and AirTran. In 2008, many airlines started charging for all checked bags. Free food in coach class finally ended in 2010 when Continental, the last holdout, gave up. Now, even major airlines like American are starting to charge extra for aisle and window seats.

Airlines are slashing routes, too. While flights at some hub airports such as JFK and Atlanta are up over the past ten years, many mid-sized cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St. Louis have seen major declines in flights. Delta announced this year that it’s cutting off service entirely to 24 smaller airports.

For all Skittles I have friends out there now is good news. Namely, the wait has finally ended. Skittles on September are finally officially and regularly available in Germany. The German community Skittles team has me on this special occasion but also like a storage package with a total of 32 Skittles packs are to come.

Hershey’s Cookies’ n Cream

Today there is a long time since something of the American tradition of company Hershey’s. A white chocolate, which is made up of small beads containing cocoa biscuit. Who here on this blog a bit longer reads may know that the white chocolate is certainly not one of my favorite snacks. But this chocolate, it has nevertheless led to that I had ordered them to me. For they saw and heard but also simply delicious.

The thin chocolate 43g is divided into twelve equal segments. Inside there are lots of small dark biscuit-balls that are visible from the outside. The white chocolate is its consistency of very soft, almost as a call to no more chocolate. The small spheres are rather crisp contrast and thus form a contrast to the white chocolate.

The taste is very sweet and white chocolate, it has an artificial vanilla flavor. Almost tastes a bit like the cream in the Oreo cookie. The biscuit-balls have the taste of her, in fact, a bit of chocolate, but they are covered by the white chocolate.

The white chocolate tastes a whole, but even more cheaply. Any self-respecting chocolate connoisseur would probably make a big circle around the chocolate. This bar is here with me again when I recently ordered some goodies from the Internet, have gone rather bump into each other. It is a Mars Bar from France. So how can I remove it from the name of the bar is the only difference from the big brother that the candy cream (a mixture of sugar, chocolate and nougat) and the caramel is here wrapped in a dark chocolate.

As you’ve probably already noticed at the top, the bolt was not able to completely heal. The caramel is expired and the bar has been dented visible. Also, the MHD of the bolt was on 22.08. expired, of course, what I find very annoying. Because these things affect the taste and make a fair trial almost impossible. Since these bars but I would like to introduce you absolutely, I’ve declared myself ready to test the bolt still here. Milka Frida – Cocoa Cream & Mint Fine

For some weeks now it is the Milka Limited KuheditionConsisting of the three Kuhdamen Resi, Frida and Lisl, each representing one kind. The beginning makes us now the Frida Kuhdame. An Alpine milk chocolate with a cocoa cream filling (50%), which was also topped with mint.

Personally, I like quite mint. Especially if it this is not correct Minzfüllung. Of the Heilemann Confiserie yes it was by this summer, a Chocolate with mintWho could score well with me. So I was particularly looking forward to this variety. And what can I say, I’m pleasantly impressed. The chocolate has a crisp outer shell alpine milk. Inside is the cocoa cream. It is the consistency of her just a bit softer than the outer chocolate shell and therefore also dente.

If we assume a bite in the mouth, the chocolate begins to melt and slowly unfolds it is a creamy, sweet chocolate flavor, but soon after by a strong, After Eight tasting mint is sought. The mint here has a slightly cooling effect. So it looks like the mint only produced but exclusively of flavors and not from natural mint oil or perhaps some similar. I think that’s a bit sad – but I still taste the mint. From the intensity-wise, the variety is certainly not for everyone. Ritter Sport Ambassador: Meet Waldenbuch

Last week Friday at 11 clock in the morning it finally happened. After we Ritter Sport ambassador had met at the main entrance of the administration building of Ritter Sport, which is about six-hour event began with an introductory round of ambassador. After the factory tour, it went from first to Ritter Sport Museum’s Cafe. There was once eaten and drunk something. Right after it went off to the meeting room. There in our seats waiting for first one chocolaty welcome gift. In addition to the new winter varieties, and other useful things, it gave each a heavy 500g Ritter Sport Whole Hazelnuts panel. Why Whole Hazelnuts?

Because it is the most popular variety in Germany Ritter Sport. For Whom the 250g board not enough, you know by now that there exists an even larger full-nut table. After we had taken all the space, there was a presentation about the individual Ritter Sport varieties and their basic ingredients. We could also try this. After the event I was still on the way Chocolate Exhibition and subsequently to Ritter Sport Chocolate Shop. There, you can actually already buy the new winter varieties. In addition, there are always Grades / test panels in the offer that there is to buy at all yet in general.

Milka Resi – Milk Cream Crackle

On Saturday, there were with the Kuhdame FridaTo marvel at the first of three new limited Kuhsorten of Milka. Today is now the turn of the Resi. It consists of the famous Milka Alpine milk chocolate with a cream filling, Mich. (36%) and in fact even with a lot of crackle, crackle (8%).

Milka Lisl – Milk Chocolate & Cream Biscuits

Common Pond Algae Could Sequester High-Level Radioactive Waste

One of the problems of dealing with nuclear waste is that the more dangerous byproducts are often mixed in with low-level waste, and it can be very complex to separate them. But researchers at Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory have discovered that common freshwater algae can remove strontium-90 from water and sequester it inside solid barium-strontium-sulfate crystals. Nature is showing us the way, we just need to take notes…

Strontium 90 has a half-life of about 30 years, is chemically very similar to calcium and thus is drawn to bone. The cumulative cancer risk from strontium 90 exposure when strontium is bound in bones for many years is very high.

The crescent-shaped, single-celled organism studied by Joester and his colleagues naturally makes biominerals that include non-radioactive strontium, and it can differentiate strontium from calcium — a rare feat. The researchers want to learn more about this selectivity because calcium is present in far greater abundance than strontium in nuclear waste, but calcium is harmless. By concentrating the radioactive strontium (Sr-90) in the form of solid crystals with very low solubility, the dangerous high-level waste could be isolated from the rest and dealt with separately.

The algae could potentially be used for bioremediation, or the mechanism used by the algae could be isolated and improved separately to design an even more selective process. This is a good example of learning from the processes that have been designed by evolutionary trial-and-error over millions of years rather than try to re-invent the wheel from scratch.

This could be useful in Japan for the eventual decontamination of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. It’s not ready now, but the decontamination will very likely take many years, so maybe at some point it’ll be used.

A 55 year old man, a beekeeper by profession, has been sentenced by the court to six months in jail for illegally practicing medicine. He claimed he could cure people with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or AIDS, using bee stings.

Bernard Nicollet, 55, is a beekeeper. But he prefers to define itself as an "apitherapeute or apipuncteur" which earned him a conviction. Weight gain could be the cause of relapse breast cancer if you believe a recent study on the subject. Human hearts developed in the laboratory

For the first time, American researchers have managed to recreate in the laboratory of human hearts. They hope to see them beat a few weeks.

This is a first. Researchers at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis were able to develop laboratory human hearts. In 2008, they had recreated the hearts of rat and pig using stem cells and muscle cells from the heart of the animal. A successful experiment that they decided to start again, this time use human cells. As for animals, hearts were very well developed.

In the case of the animal experiment, organs were fully functional and had begun to beat. They were, however, remained too puny to be grafted. Similarly, human hearts cannot be transplanted. But the team hopes "they will show signs of beating in the coming weeks “As stated by Dr. Doris Taylor, an expert in regenerative medicine who led the research.

If successful, it will be possible in future to transplant hearts from patients’ own cells. A technique that would avoid among other things, releases may occur and treatments normally required when the body transplanted from another person. However, the task is difficult, as explained in Sunday Times Dr. Taylor: "There are many obstacles to overcome to generate a fully functional heart, but I predict it might be possible to grow whole organs for transplantation".

Ways to Apply Eye Makeup in 8 Steps

When evening calls for a glamorous look, you want to focus on making your eyes amazing. Here’s how to apply eye makeup in only 8 steps.

Here’s How:

1. Prep your eyes with concealer Concealer can be used to cover up under-eye circles or just the bluish discoloration just under your inner eye. To cover dark undereye circles, apply three dots of concealer under each eye. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat, never rub with your ring finger (this finger tends to have the softest pad) until it disappears.

2. Apply eye base to your lid Eye base is the secret to keeping your shadow in place for hours. Without properly priming your lid first, your eye shadow will likely end up a greasy line in your crease.

3. Follow with eyeliner Dark eye shadows work great as eyeliners. Wet a slanted brush, and then dip in a dark eye shadow. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger. You don’t want a prominent line. For a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eye shadow along the upper lid and below the lid. You don’t want a stark line, instead you want to blend it so it’s "smudge-y."

4. Apply eye shadow. It’s great to use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow (see How to apply eye shadow). Allowing them to blend into each other like a rainbow is gorgeous, according to celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well.

5. Brighten your eyes with a highlighter this step involves only the inside part of the eye. Putting a bit of your lightest eye shadow in the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly (this is the makeup artist’s secret and I use this trick all the time). I usually dab a finger into my lightest eye shadow and then I press it into the inner corner of my eye where the upper lid meets the bottom lid. This totally makes eyes "pop."

6. Highlight your brow Take the same light eye shadow and dab it on your brow bone, concentrating on your mid-brow outward. Blend with your finger. I like to use Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat just below my brow and just above it, but a super light shadow will do you.

7. Curl lashes an eyelash curler will make even long lashes look more gorgeous. For added effect, you can heat the curler under a blow-dryer for a couple seconds. Test curler before applying to lashes because you could burn yourself.

8. Apply mascara Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well. See How to apply mascara for step-by-step instruction and extra tips.

Space X unveils high-powered rocket

After that, he or she may recommend that you visit a specialist such as a reproductive endocrinologist, a neurologist, a nutritionist, or even a psychiatrist or psychologist. You may not be preggers, but here are 12 reasons why you may save on tampons this month:

1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a common condition that affects 5 to 10% of women in the U.S., according to the NIH. The condition—marked by irregular menses, infertility, hirsutism, acne, and weight gain—is caused by excessive testosterone in a woman’s endocrine system. There may or may not be a presence of actual cysts on the ovaries, detected by an ultrasound. “This is an important condition that should not be missed because of its association with reproductive consequences, increased risk of diabetes, and cardiovascular disease,” says Dr. Sharon Lahiri, an endocrinologist at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

2. Eating Disorders or Lousy Diet

3. Excessive Exercise

4. Stress

If there’s an imbalance of female sex hormones, estrogen, or progestin, this will disrupt the pituitary gland’s production of Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinising Hormone, and will throw off the fine-tuned cycle.

5. Lack of Sleep

Sure, we blame lousy sleep habits for just about everything, but they can be the culprit when it comes to an erratic menstrual cycle. Though there’s no direct correlation between sleep and your cycle, studies have shown that women with more erratic sleep patterns are more likely to experience amenorrhea. Shift workers and incarcerated women, says Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, Director of the Henry Ford Center for Reproductive Medicine, should consider the consequences of lack of shut-eye.

6. Other Women

Remember in college when you suddenly needed a tampon around the same time as your roommate? “Pheromones are produced by all individuals and those cause a type of synchronicity with women who are together for any length of time,” says Dr. Pick. So essentially, you could blame your best friend when your period is late.

7. Booze and Drugs

I’ll refrain from making jokes about how hard living leads to a certain activity that may halt your period. “The extreme result of this exposure would be loss of the ability of the ovary to respond to hormonal control, in which case premature menopause occurs,” says Dr. Ginsburg. “Of course, this would not happen with modest use, but would be expected to be seen only with sustained, significant intake.”

8. Smoking

Under no circumstances is smoking good for your health, but clinical studies have also shown that cigarettes can actually kill your eggs and cause early menopause. Pardon my scare tactics: Want to be alone with hot flashes while you smell like an ashtray?

9. Hypothyroidism

Irregular and painful periods are associated with hypothyroidism, a condition in which your thyroid is not producing enough of the thyroid hormone. It is organized according to a principle of partitioning on two floors, which intelligently distributes space while planning a certain intimacy to each space partitioned. The overall impression is very geometric shape of both the space by cutting the panels forming the walls, which assumes a pattern of hexagonal shape polyhedral everywhere. It notes that the walls are double, which gives an impression of depth and enhances the intimacy of the spaces. The architects were also able to seamlessly distribute the light playing on the contrasts of very dark areas in the corridors, on ceilings against the light areas of the openings.

The project comprises a total of three spaces, one is a lounge that includes a relaxation area where gourmet coffee is served, the second is a more conventional space or express where guests can enjoy an espresso, and the third is an interior plaza.

Social networks and mobile phones will be the next target for cybercriminals according to the annual analysis prepared by the company Symantec.

Users of social networks and smartphones owners are cautioned. They will be the next target for cybercriminals. The software company antivirus and data protection in Symantec’s new report reveals that Facebook, Twitter and Google Operating System Android is under threat from hackers. Indeed, increased vulnerabilities of these programs are 163% in 2010. However, the spread of viruses through these channels is reduced compared to those that circulate by e-mail.

Symantec is including in its report several Android flaws that could allow the intrusion of malware. For now, six programs of this type have been discovered in distributed applications through a download service in China. Currently, cyber attacks are increasing alarmingly. Their rate increased by 93% between 2009 and 2010 through the use of URL shortcuts. These addresses do very little evidence to enable us to identify the source, and are therefore easily distinguishable from viable links.

African Elephants: the older and experienced leaders better manage threats

Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society BA British study shows that, in herds of wild elephants in Africa, older matriarchs respond more effectively than young females to the threat posed by predators for the young group they manage.

Zoologists, led by Dr Karen McComb, a psychologist at the University of Sussex, broadcast over loudspeakers recordings of male lion roars to 39 family groups of elephants in Amboseli National Park (south of Kenya) With an average of 5 adult, student and filming their reactions.

They found that among the leaders of each group – females – aged individuals were more often able than younger people to take appropriate defensive measures – listening and after prolonged roar, turning toward the source of noise, and clustering around young adults to protect them.

"Sensitivity to this threat well known to increase with age and is higher among the oldest matriarchs, which have probably accumulated more experience. Our study provides the first empirical evidence that individuals within a social group, can benefit directly from the influence of a former, because of its increased capacity to make critical decisions (….). Capacity likely to be very relevant in other social species with large brains and long life, where older individuals play a key role in coordinating the activities of the group ", Say the researchers.

H1N1 vaccine: linked to an increase of narcolepsy in France?

Afssaps found a slight excess of cases of narcolepsy in teens vaccinated against influenza H1N1 in France last year.

After Finland and Sweden, it was the turn of the France to examine the association between vaccine anti-H1N1 cases narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness. Yesterday, the French Agency for Safety of Health Products (Afssaps) stated that "25 cases of narcolepsy have been reported among the 5.7 million people vaccinated with Pandemrix and Panenza, including 11 children aged less than 16 years. In August 2010, the Finnish and Swedish authorities had already expressed concern about the phenomenon after seeing several cases of narcolepsy in persons vaccinated against influenza pandemic during the campaign. In a period of 1 to 6 months after vaccination, Europe would have found nearly 200 cases occurred mainly in the two Nordic countries.

However, there would be no cause for concern according Afssaps who speculated that "area may see the development of narcolepsy post vaccination has now passed. Nevertheless, a reappraisal of the benefit / risk Pandemrix main vaccine associated cases reported is currently led by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and should be finalized in July.

More than half of French uses homeopathy

A recent study conducted by Ipsos for Boiron Laboratories indicates that the French would use 53% of homeopathic medicines. This result indicates an increase in consumption in recent years, these products of alternative medicine.

A few years ago, in 2004, only 39% of the French drank homeopathy. Today in 2011, they would be 53% to opt for the alternative medicine that remains yet unclear. Homeopathic medicines have thus found their place in 80% of French households and that, although 20% of them use these drugs while ignoring the nature of the products they own.

And it is a medicine that makes it very easy to self-medicate.” It is told by Dr. Christine Coquart, homeopath in Paris. Thus, 65% of users say they use homeopathy for his side "natural” and 49% for avoid drugs "chemical". Children in strollers are too exposed to pollution

The Association of Environmental Health of France has indicated through a recent study that children seated in strollers inhale fine particles of a rate high, which could be hazardous to health.

According to the Institute for Public Health, these micro particles are carcinogenic and cause many health problems in the child.

You Can Become the Proud Owner of a Staten Island Ferry, If You Can Find a Place to Park It

In 2008, Jacques Guillet, walked out of a Manhattan Municipal Building, $152,500 poorer, but the proud owner of a used 3,500-passenger Staten Island Ferry. The former marina owner and sailboat racer had a plan to convert the ferry into a floating dorm for New York City’s college students. The numbers seemed be in his favor: the city was facing high real estate costs combined with limited space for student housing. But there was also a big problem. Mr. Guillet had nowhere to park the ferry and the city was asking $1000 a day for berthing privileges. So Mr. Guillet did what many of us do with unwanted items: he tried to sell the boat on eBay.

This February, Mr. Guillet posted an ad on eBay for the 300-foot long, 1,640-horsepower, 2500 ton, bright orange boat. For just $500,000, the ferry could have been yours (the price didn’t including pickup or shipping). 9000 hits later, there were no takers. The Wall Street Journal reports that Mr. Guillet and his broker, Pat Doland, are still trying to sell the boat. Mr. Guillet and Mr. Dolan have spoken with a few interested buyers. There have been nibbles from an antique dealer, a Jewish wedding promoter (imagine the awesome bar mitzvas), and a hotelier who envisions a floating resort.

The ferries have had a history of purposeful reuse. During the 1970′s, one ferry was reused as a floating methadone clinic, and another two ferries were reused as "prison ships" for overflow inmate housing of prisoners from Rikers, where inmates lifted weights and played ping-pong – think of a mobile Alcataraz combined rec-room.

Other repurposing attempts have been less successful. During the 1960s, plans to convert a ferry into a mall with a movie theater never materialized. Other ferry owners have had dreams of turning their ferries into waterfront restaurants, but decades later, their ferries sunk into the Hudson River or were disassembled for scrap.

Mr. Guillet, who made his money in the demolition business, could always sell the 1960′s era vessel for scrap. But why should an old beauty go down like that? If you have ever dreamed of owning a ferry, having a floating casino, club or swimming pool, now could be your chance!

Have a Seat on a Bench Made from 5,000 Recycled Metrocards

In New York’s subways, you see a lot of discarded Metrocards. It’s sad, not only because most people drop them on the floor rather than in a trash can, but because the cards are rechargeable, and there’s no good reason to dispose of them in the first place. But NYC-based artist and designer Stephen Shaheen has come up with a unique way to recycle old cards, or at least 5,000 of them: he’s made a one of a kind bench.

Measuring 48" x 18" x 18" and made of the cards, various types of glue, and an armature of 1/8" steel, the aptly-named Metrobench is an homage to the Big Apple’s public transportation system and an outstanding example of how everyday objects can be recycled instead of thrown away. To collect the cards, Shaheen used Craigslist to assemble a team to help him; they had all 5,000 in just a week. Of his work, Shaheen says:

I was inspired to use these discarded objects–at once very personal and expendable–in a way that reflects the manner in which mass transit joins many diverse lives into a single moment or path together.

And as New York begins to introduce smart, contact-less cards to replace the Metrocards (which are swiped), Shaheen will have a lot more raw material to produce more benches.

Club Mid: The Mideast’s Perfect Travel Spots for 2011

Every year around this time The New York Times draws up an extensive list of the best places to go during the year–the world’s best travel spots. It’s always a fun list–a wonderful way to catch up on some of the world’s forgotten spots (who would have thought to look up the Austrian town of Kitzbühel, the Austrian resort town known for its plethora of ski lifts and now, increasingly, for its restaurants?).

As far as the Middle East is concerned, it’s a curious if entirely unscientific way to gauge the region’s hold on the western imagination. Maybe not so unscientific: is it entirely coincidental that last year the Middle East (broadly interpreted, as always at Middle East Issues, as the region between North Africa and Pakistan) rated just three spots out of 31, a pretty dismal batting average (.097). Not to mention the fact that all three spots were clichés: Damascus, Marrakesh and Istanbul. Fine cities each, but not quite the most original picks in the world, and Marrakesh had been picked the year before. Seriously, of all the gin joints from Casablanca to Lahore, and Times editors had to fall back on a repeat?

The previous year’s batting average wasn’t that much better: four spots out of 44, but at least Beirut topped the entire list (admittedly, your writer was born and raised there), and Marrakesh aside, the other spots had the benefit of being interesting picks: Qatar’s Doha and Egypt’s Red Sea.

The banner year was 2008. Check it out: seven of the 53 destinations were in the Middle East, and each one of them a daring pick, including spots in Libya, Iran and Algeria–not quite the first places that pop to mind when considering a fun trip for a week.

And so here we are with picks for 2011. The Times is picking 41 spots this year, a respectable number that suggests the economy may be on the mend (though nothing like the flush feel of 2008, which proved to be more of a reflection of the previous go-go years). How did the Middle East do this year? Not back at all, considering. Five spots in all, a very respectable 15 percent. And the picks are on the border between interesting and fascinating: Iraqi Kurdistan; Tlemcen, Algeria; Oualidia, Morocco; Port Ghalib, Egypt; Tozeur, Tunisia; and Erzurum, Turkey. Here we go.

First London Olympics Gold Medal Should Go to the Velodrome Buidling

The London 2012 Olympics are coming up pretty quickly. Tickets are on sale, the clock is ticking away (sometimes when it works) on Trafalgar Square and slowly buildings are being completed and unveiled.

The Gold Medal for first to finish, greenest, and most beautiful building has to go to the Velodrome, designed by Hopkins Architects. Take a peek.

London’s claim to fame for these games is that they will be the most sustainable ever and leave a legacy to the nation. The Velodrome is living up to that goal.

It was chosen from a number of competitors because of its sustainable and efficient design. The 6,000 seat building has a 250 metre UCI (International Cycling Union) approved indoor track and 400m BMX Olympic circuit. The two tiers of seating allow a 360 degree view of the track.

Construction work on the Velodrome started in March 2009 – it was one of the last of the big 5 venues to start work but is the first Olympic building to be completed on time and on budget.

The outside is clad in 5,000 M2 of Western Red Cedar timbers to draw a parallel with the timber track inside the venue. It is perforated to allow cooling of the interior. Strategically placed roof windows reduce the need for artificial lighting. Natural ventilation is achieved through openings in the external timber cladding of the venue resulting in substantial carbon emission reductions. Air flows across the 6,000 stands of seats and through the top, being replaced by cool, fresh air from below.

The striking white roof has rows of skylights crossing the complex, providing daylight and allowing overhead lights to be off during the daytime. It is made from a net of cables supported by the surrounding steel super structure and will deflect the summer sun during the games thus reducing the cooling needs. The roof collects rain water as well, which is stored for later use in the facility. The shape of the roof was created to reflect the geometry of the cycling track, using a very lightweight double curving cable net structure. It weighs half of the roof of the Beijing Velodrome.

The Velodrome track has been designed to be the world’s fastest cycling by tailoring its geometry and setting the temperature and environmental conditions within to create record-breaking conditions. A team of 26 specialist carpenters installed it over an 8 week period. It is made of 56km of surface timber from sustainably-sourced Siberian pine, fixed into place with more than 300,000 nails. It was designed to evenly distribute noise from the cheering crowd to keep from distracting riders.

Water saving fittings and collection of rainwater for reuse in building are built into design to help reduce water consumption

After the Games, a road cycle circuit and mountain bike course and reconfigured BMX circuit will be added to the Velodrome to create the Lee Valley VeloPark, combining cycling facilities across all disciplines in one cycling ‘hub’. It will be owned and operated by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

Sir Richard Branson’s Deep-Sea Submarine to Found Out Ocean’s Unknown Depths

Our ocean, particularly Deep Ocean, is one of the least explored places on earth. We know just a fraction of what plants and animals live under the waves, and barely understand the complexity of ocean ecosystems. One part of this is because we haven’t spent as much time designing and building the sophisticated tools required for diving into the deepest parts of the sea as we have building space ships. That needs to change, and Sir Richard Branson wants to be a leading figure in that change. He has unveiled the Virgin Oceanic submarine, capable of diving into even the Mariana Trench. But this will be just one of five incredible trenches the submarine is set to explore.

VIrgin Oceanic is a five-journey proposal, which includes the Mariana Trench, the Puerto Rico Trench, the Diamantina Trench, the South Sandwich Trench and the Molloy Deep in the Arctic Ocean.

The team will be Sir Richard Branson and Chris Welsh, an American explorer, and they’ll be working in conjunction with Scripps Institution of Oceanography as well as other top marine science programs. And the submarine is designed by Graham Hawks. The craft will be able to dive 37,000 feet, or about 7 miles deep (about as terrifying a trip as orbiting the moon) and will be made of carbon fiber and titanium to resist the extraordinary pressure. Also, the craft will be able to dive at a rate of 350 feet per minute, which seems quite fast and a round-trip venture to the bottom of the Mariana Trench would take about five hours.

Of course, the features of the submarine that make it an exploration vessel are just as important, and it will have sensors and cameras for recording the voyages and taking measurements for scientists. Here’s a video of the concept:

Coal power plants: the World Bank limits its grants to poorest countries

After announcing plans to stop funding oil palm responsible for excessive deforestation, the World Bank continues its greening addressing coal. The international aid agency has decided to substantially limit its grants to projects of coal plants, limiting them to the poorest countries.

Now, only the poorest countries can obtain financial assistance from the World Bank for the financing of coal plants, reports the site Guardian. The bank intends to focus on the deployment of renewable energy, and grant subsidies to countries not having the opportunity to switch to cleaner projects.

About a year ago, in March 2010, the World Bank had a strong controversy by funding a coal plant in South Africa, one of the dirtiest in the world. A loan of about $ 3.75 billion had been granted to the country, and many environmental groups had revolted against that decision.

Even today, environmentalists are skeptical about the greening displayed grants from the World Bank. "This strategy is disappointing. The World Bank seems to greening its operations while continuing his usual questionable practices, “Alison Doig believes, the NGO Christian Aid. Long hair has a lot more flexibility and options. Not to mention the added bonus of having a cute, choppy hairstyles!

P.J. O’Rourke Told Cyclists to "Go Play in Traffic"

He doesn’t mean it in a nice way, and he never did. P.J. O’Rourke is a satirist, using wit as a way to deliver social criticism, and in this week’s Wall Street Journal he skewers cyclists, inviting them to "Go Play in Traffic." While it’s a little sad that a respected humorist so excoriates the humble bike and those who go human-powered, cyclists should be neither alarmed nor offended by O’Rourke’s words. O’Rourke always hated the bike (in print, at least), and now that it’s becoming more of a needed transportation mainstay on crowded American city streets, reducing pollution and carbon dioxide emissions and improving health, O’Rourke is airing his feelings once again.

In the WSJ article, O’Rourke says cyclists are "taking over city streets." That’s a pretty big statement, but O’Rourke probably knows it’s hyperbole – even in Portland, Oregon, bicycles’ share of the commuting stream can’t get above 10%.

O’Rourke seems offended by the build-up of bicycle infrastructure in New York City and elsewhere, though it costs a fraction of building new roads. He neither gives any historical context to his disparagement of the bike (after all, much road-building in the early part of the 20th century was due to pushing from the bike lobby’s Good Roads movement) nor does he give cycling any credit to biking for reducing traffic congestion.

Only a few bicycles are needed to take up as much space as my Chevrolet Suburban–just one if its rider is wobbling all over the place while trying to Tweet. And my Suburban seats eight. The answer to traffic congestion is lower taxes so that legions of baby boomers my age can afford to retire and stay home. – P.J. O’Rourke

O’Rourke has consistently knocked bicycles. In his 1995 book, Republican Party Reptile, he called them "undignified," and added:"Going about in public with one’s head between one’s knees, and one’s rump protruding in the air is nobody’s idea of acceptable behavior."

Women of "ample proportions" he continues, should never be seen on a bicycle. Bicycles, he concludes, are unsafe, unfair (because they don’t supposedly pay for road taxes) and even un-American.

So, behind the satire, does O’Rourke not see cycling’s benefits? Hard to say – from the driver’s seat of a Suburban (his 2010 book was called Driving Like Crazy: Thirty Years of Vehicular Hell-bending) a bicycle can just seem like an obstructions. But then, so too can pedestrians.

No catwalk frock, however beautiful or controversial, can expect to reach anywhere close to the audience numbers that Kate Middleton’s wedding dress will be seen by.
